Guðrúnarlaug Hot Pot in West Iceland is a natural geothermal pool in a striking setting

Exploring geothermal experiences while in Iceland is pretty essential to being truly part of Iceland. The country has many natural hot springs with some perfect for bathing. During our recent trip, we relaxed in a West Iceland hot pot and enjoyed the therapeutic, calming warmth of a geothermally heated pool. Divine!

History of Guðrúnarlaug  Hot Pot

Guðrúnarlaug hot pot dates back 1,000 years and is named after the heroine Guðrún Ósvífursdóttir featured in the Icelandic Sagas. Guðrún was noted for her great wisdom and beauty. The setting surrounding the pool immediately enchants and welcomes visitors to savor a truly Icelandic experience. The sculpted yet rocky surrounding landscape is lovingly covered with green foliage. A stream and waterfall trickle nearby. So beautiful and peaceful!

It is said that Guðrún spent quite a bit of her time in or near the hot pool. After dipping into the pool, we could see why! The hot pool has been changed throughout the years and actually was covered in a landslide in the 1860s. 140 years later, the hot pool was restored close to the original one.  The restored pool was constructed in a style believed to be similar to that of the Vikings so perhaps close to what it looked like when Guðrún bathed.

When you first approach Guðrúnarlaug hot pot, you will see Hotel Edda. The hot pot is behind the hotel and a bit up the hill. The pool is open and free to the public. A little changing hut makes a visit while exploring pretty easy. The hut is a simple hut without showers or a restroom. Once you enter the pool, you will feel sublime.

Please note that the rocks may be slippery when entering the pool, so hold on.

Behind the hot pool is a gentle waterfall. I have seen many waterfalls in Iceland yet each and every one is special. Admiring this delightful little waterfall capped up our visit to Guðrúnarlaug Hot Pot. Such a wonderful afternoon of relaxation and recharging!
