Enchanted by Stunning Nature at Cave Point County Park in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin

Door County's Cave Point County Park dazzled us with incredible view after incredible view. We spent a morning crawling along this stunning glacially created, wave-worn landscape.  We found Cave Point to be a spot where you really want to pause and be in the moment.

Views of crystal blue Lake Michigan from Cave Point are absolutely phenomenal. We paused quite a few times just to marvel as the sunlight-studded waves gently bobbed up and down in front of us. Following the rocky trail along the shore, we took every opportunity to peek out at the lake.

Cave Point Park represents one of the westernmost points of the Niagara Escarpment. The dolomite exposed at Cave Point was created when animal, plant and calcareous sands laying at the bottom of an ancient sea underwent millions of years of compaction and chemical alterations creating the bedrock. During the glacial period, the back and forth of the glaciers scraped away the weaker bedrock leaving the stronger dolomite in the interesting formations we still today. Of course, erosion forces are still at work continuously carving.

One of the promontories we ambled upon provided a spectacular view of a cave. As waves crashed in, we noticed remarkable spray jumping up above the rocks. Additionally, mini waterfalls cascaded up and over the jumbled rock edges.

The preserve is absolutely breathtaking. There is no shortage of interesting spots with amazing and unique views. Plenty of promontories yield magnificent views but do take caution when exploring them. Make sure you have sure footing and watch for rocks and tree roots. We took our time reaching various points and really were amazed by so many views.

Trails at Cave Point link up with those of Whitefish Dunes State Park. Definitely, give yourself time to wander some of the trails in the woodlands. The forest is beautiful and will add to your sense of peace. We were surprised to encounter so few others on the woodland trail. The woodlands are absolutely      rich and full of wildlife. Truly a beautiful hike!

Cave Point Park is a popular spot for kayaking and offers uniquely enchanting views. Standing up on the cliff we noted a number of caves carved out of the fractured bluffs. As the waves of Lake Michigan rushed in, the water would burst and flow in unique patterns in and around the caves. So, kayaking would afford quite an interesting view of this phenomenon. If you are interested in kayaking, check out the kayaking tours in the area.

The county park is located within a state park which makes things a little confusing. You need the Wisconsin State Park Vehicle Admission Sticker to park in the state park but not the county park. So, I do recommend arriving early to obtain parking in the county park if you do not have the sticker.

The formations and views of wave action at Cave Point County Park craft a remarkable experience. We escaped the every day and basked in such wonders during our visit. Cave Point County Park was certainly a highlight of our visit to Door County!
