William G. Lunney Lake Farm County Park and Lower Yahara River Trail in Madison, Wisconsin

Recently, I learned about a pedestrian and bike bridge crossing Lake Waubesa from Madison, WI to McFarland, WI. I knew the views had to be magnificent, so we opted to explore during our recent visit to Madison. The bridge is part of the Lower Yahara River Trail which we accessed through William G. Lunney Lake Farm County Park.

We parked at William G. Lunney Lake Farm County Park to hike to the bridge. Ample picnicking areas, a playground and cornholes were available near the parking lot. Just a short distance past the playground, we embarked on a natural trail. The trail heads through an area of archaeological importance where Native American artifacts have been found.

Hiking Natural Trails Through Woodlands

We soon found ourselves on a trail hugging Lake Waubesa with little peeks from between the trees of the lake. At some points, the trail rolled. A few other trails spindled off. We savored our peaceful summer hike under the shade of the trees. Soon, we saw the boardwalk bridge ahead. From our trail, we had to hike up a little hill to meet the Lower Yahara River Trail.

Walking a Boardwalk Bridge Across Lake Waubesa

The mile-long boardwalk bridge is pretty impressive. It features a variety of lookout points throughout the walk between Madison and McFarland. Whether you opt to stop or not, you will be surrounded by fantastic Lake Waubesa views as you cross. In addition to providing an extension of the Lower Yahara River Trail, the bridge is part of the Capital City Trail. Biking in addition to hiking is welcome.

Breathtaking views will captivate you! We did enjoy scouting for waterfowl. Lake Waubesa just absolutely sparkled under the late summer sun. We spotted some fellow hikers enjoying lunch on one of the benches on the bridge. Truly, a remarkable experience.

At 328 acres, William G. Lunney Lake Farm County Park is quite sizeable. The preserve contains a campground, two accessible fishing piers, a boat launch, an observation tower and more. Paired with the Lower Yahara River Trail and Capital City Trail, a collection of nature adventures are available. We visited William G. Lunney Lake Farm County Park on a pretty hot summer day and would like to return when it is cooler so we can spend a little more time exploring.
