Nature at the Confluence provides a much needed nature respite in South Beloit, Wisconsin while representing a remarkable and continually developing environmental restoration effort. I have had this preserve on my list for quite awhile. A recent sunny day offered the perfect excuse for exploring this wonderful preserve. Enjoy a little peek:
Skokie River Nature Preserve welcomes wilderness lovers with over 4 miles of trails in Lake Forest, Illinois. The preserve includes woodlands, prairie, meadows, and wetlands. Plus, a number of bridges allow hikers to crisscross the Skokie River. One visit and you will be enamored!
Cedar Cliff Forest Preserve in Illinois' Winnebago County features 60-foot-high limestone cliffs rising above the Rock River. The forest preserve provides a wonderful set of trails through prairie and woodland while treating to cliff and river views.
Dayton Bluffs Preserve in Ottawa, Illinois offers a nature adventure full of deep ravines, Fox River views, wide open prairie, and magical woodlands. With its proximity to Starved Rock State Park and Matthiessen State Park, the preserve can easily be overlooked. However, Dayton Bluffs' trails present avenues for remarkable and inspiring nature adventures of their own.
A Unique Nature Exploration at Ferson Creek Fen
Ferson Creek Fen Nature Preserve in St. Charles, Illinois invites explorers to wander a unique wetland environment along the Fox River. We visited in late fall and made a lot of discoveries along the way.
A recent summer wander brought us to Silver Springs State Park in Yorkville, Illinois. This preserve has been recommended to me by readers and immediately we could see why. The dense woodlands immediately delighted us and folded us into a world far away from it all.
Fantastic Views in a Scientifically Notable Preserve: Castle Rock State Park

Illiniwek Forest Preserve in Hampton, Illinois, treated us to a lovely yet rugged evening hike during our Quad Cities getaway. Throughout our hike, we hiked up onto the bluffs through a forest ablaze with wildflowers. We were entirely at peace surrounded by nature while wandering Illiniwek.
Wandering the Footpaths of Somme Woods
Enjoying a taste of spring as we toggle between the seasons, we embarked on an adventure at Somme Woods in Northbrook. Somme Woods actually represents a portion of a series of preserves including Somme Prairie Grove and Somme Prairie Nature Preserve. However, we were woodland bound!
Water Views, Cliffs, Forest Trails and a Waterfall Charm at Kankakee River State Park
The striking natural features of Kankakee River State Park in Bourbonnais, Illinois have long been celebrated. Evidence of several different prehistoric sites have been located within the preserve. Both the Illini and Miami inhabited the area during first contact with Europeans in the 1670's and 1680's.
