Gail Borden Public library has provided the Elgin Area with a place for learning and pursuing knowledge since 1894. The current location of the main library opened in 1968. The expansive library has an extensive collection and a wealth of services including passport services and an array of interesting exhibits. Take a little peek inside the renowned institution:
Exploring a Manmade Island in the Middle of the Fox River in Elgin, Illinois

Walton Island in Elgin may be small but the island provides for a nice little nature adventure right in the city. Once just a muddy patch, the local Isaac Walton League launched an effort to enlarge and stabilize the island in the 1930s. Today, the island offers a lovely little spot for a nature wander.

A sunny Saturday during our Elgin Area adventure provided us with the perfect opportunity for exploring local trails. The region has quite a range of trails to choose from and with a free afternoon, we were able to choose two. During our exploration, we hiked along the trails at Hampshire Forest Preserve and Eagles Forest Preserve.

Our visit to Elgin and the surrounding area indulged us with some incredible foodie adventures. The plus side of being so close to Elgin -- we can quickly return to some of the new favorites we discovered on our exploration. We indeed found some tantalizing favorites that we would like to return to -- plus, we would like to try more of the Elgin food scene in the future:

Elgin History Museum sets the foundations for any Elgin visit with interesting artifacts and engaging exhibits. The number and quality of exhibits within the museum impressed us and invited us to explore the stories of Elgin.
Adventure Exploring Local Eateries, Architecture, History and Nature in the Elgin Area

Last weekend we visited Elgin, Illinois and the surrounding cities for a getaway and certainly picked the most magnificent weekend while the tulips downtown were fully abloom. The brilliant red, orange, and yellow blooms dazzled us and gave us a glimpse of the spirit that is alive in the Elgin Area. Although we do not live far from Elgin, our weekend exploration welcomed us to so many incredible sites, preserves and businesses that we had yet to uncover. Our weekend of discovery was just what we needed to rejuvenate. In my next series, I will share more about the spots we enjoyed in Elgin. Enjoy a little preview of our getaway below.
An early spring hike took us to the trails of Bowes Creek Woods Forest Preserve in Elgin. Bowes Creek boasts a natural fabric of prairie, woodland and a bubbling creek. Immediately upon embarking on the trail, we were greeted by red-winged blackbirds. We knew we would enjoy this preserve!
Winter Rambling Through a Tranquil Landscape at Elgin's Burnidge Forest Preserve
Burnidge Forest Preserve in Elgin, Illinois treats hikers to 9 miles of trails within one of the largest forest preserves of the Kane County Forest Preserve system. The preserve contains horse riding trails and abuts on the seasonal Paul Wolff Campground. Upon embarking on our snow hiking adventure, we immediately delighted in the rolling trails of the landscape. Of course, sapphire blue skies and the brilliant winter sun added to the adventure.
