Whose Charger Is Whose? Whooz Will Help!

Friday, May 30, 2014

**Disclosure: We receive a complimentary product in order to conduct an accurate review. No compensation was received. All opinions are 100% my own.

As my daughter gets older, the number of electronics in our house is growing--quite possibly at an exponential rate. My daughter also seems to be getting more and more possessive of her things--which I guess is understandable as she is developing her own identity. Eventually, I am sure we will have quite a few chargers around to sort out. Mompreneur Sativa Turner faced a similar dilemma years ago while attending college. Sativa and her roommate debated over which charger was whose. In order to distinguish between the two, Sativa took out a marker to design hers. This incident inspired Sativa create quality yet removable labels to use to personalize chargers, adaptors and more for iDevices.

Voila, Whooz:

One of the earliest stops on our trip provided us with a wonderful morning exploring the artistic talent that is threaded throughout the region. Our morning also marked a first for us--a visit to a glassblowing studio!

5 Facts in Celebration of Memorial Day

Monday, May 26, 2014

In honor of Memorial Day, here are some facts that you may not already know. If you are looking for more, the History Channel has an excellent collection of articles and videos honoring Memorial Day.
  • While Memorial Day did not become a federal holiday until 1971, traces of the holiday go all the way back to ancient times. In fact, ancient Athens held public funerals for the war dead after battles.
  • Even before the Civil War ended, women in the South decorated the graves of the fallen in commemoration. The Ladies Memorial Association of Columbus, Georgia decided to commemorate the graves of the fallen each year in 1886. This action may have influenced General John A. Logan, the founder of Decoration Day which eventually evolved into Memorial Day.
  • General Logan chose May 30th for Decoration Day specifically because the day was not associated with a particular battle.
  • Memorial Day originally served to commemorate those who fell during the Civil War, the conflict that has claimed the most American lives. During WWI, the holiday expanded in remembrance of those that have fallen in all conflicts.
  • In 2000, Congress passed legislation encouraging Americans to observe a moment of silence in honor of the fallen at 3PM local time. The time was chosen because it is a time when a majority of Americans are most likely to be enjoying their freedoms---freedoms protected by the fallen.
As you spend time with friends and family this Memorial Day, please take some time to honor those that have sacrificed so much for our freedoms. Thank you to all who have served.

Combine Theater and Nature During Theatre-Hikes at the Morton Arboretum

Thursday, May 22, 2014

**Disclosure: We will be attending a complimentary Theatre-Hike this summer to provide an accurate review. No compensation was received. All opinions are 100% my own.

Last year, we found ourselves with a free weekend and decided to attend a theatre-hike at The Morton Arboretum. We visited on what had to be the hottest day of the year to see The Three Musketeers. We were totally blown away by the entire performance and barely noticed we were dripping in sweat! I will forever be in awe of the fact that the actors were able to sword fight in the 90+ degree weather! We thoroughly enjoyed the splendor of a summer's day at The Morton Arboretum while being engaged in a quality production. Theatre-Hikes are great ways to enjoy nature while immersing yourself in a bit of the theatrical arts.

Important things to know about theatre-hikes:
  • Theater-Hikes enrich our lives by combining theater, exercise and appreciation for the environment.
  • Hikes are low impact.
  • Walks are less than 2 miles and incorporate about 6-9 stops with about 1/4 mile of walking between stops.
  • The hikes are open to those with strollers and/or wheelchairs.
  • You will need a blanket and/or chair, water, sunscreen and insect repellent. We also found that having a mister may be fun.
  • The free format and wonderful space allows for distracted children to move away for a bit and then rejoin the performance later on. Some parents take their kids off to the side for a bit for a little game of catch or even to blow bubbles. Then, they rejoin the hike a little bit later!
  • Shows are family-friendly and avoid strong language and adult situations--parents can breathe easy!
  • Theater-Hikes is a non-for-profit organization and relies upon donors. Theatre-Hikes honors the talent of their actors and makes sure that they are properly compensated for their work.
Performance information:

Theatre-hikes will be held on Saturdays and Sundays, July through October. Performances in July, August and September are at 1PM. In October, performances are at 3PM. In addition to the weekends, there will be a performance on Columbus Day {October 13}. Each month features a different performance. This year's season opens with Alice in Wonderland in July. Alice's adventure is just so perfect for an adventure around part of the Arboretum! August will feature You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown. Charlie Brown will be a little different than the other theatre-hikes this year in that it will be in one location. Since you will still be out in nature, you will be able to take the kids to the side if they need to stretch out and return to the show a little later. September will bring Enchanted April, a story about four very different women in England in the 1920's who take a trip to Italy. This event sounds like it would be a great Mom's Afternoon Out yet the production is still appropriate for kids if you want to bring them along! To round out the season, Theatre-Hikes will bring several spooky Chicago tales to life in Resurrected in October. I love that Theatre-Hikes brings something a little spookier to the Arboretum during October and it is totally related to Chicagoland!

If you are looking for something new to do this summer, I highly recommend a theatre-hike. A theatre-hike is an excellent way to enjoy a glorious summer day while appreciating a wonderful performance! Tickets for Arboretum members are $5 per child, $10 per adult. For nonmembers, tickets include Arboretum admission and are $10 per child, $20 per adult. You can find out more about Theatre-Hikes and register for tickets on The Morton Arboretum website.

Theatre-Hikes does have some other performances in Chicagoland. You can check out other venues on the Theatre-Hikes website.

Later this summer, I will bring some more details about Theatre-Hikes. Thank you to Artistic Director Bradley Baker for some inside scoop about Theatre-Hikes!

A Taste of Hendricks and Morgan Counties in Indiana {A View of What is to Come}

Tuesday, May 20, 2014

Last weekend, my family and I spent a weekend discovering the places, people, creations and food of Hendricks and Morgan Counties in Indiana. While only 4 hours away from Chicagoland, we really felt whisked away from the humdrum of our regular lives and came back recharged and renewed. We were able to pack in a lot in a short weekend but had a blast the entire time. We experienced nature, art, history, celebration, nostalgia and more. Everything we found not only delighted us but inspired us as well. Next week, I will be beginning a more in depth series on our discoveries. However, I wanted to give you a little bit of a sneak peek of what to expect. I am sure that many of you are busy planning summer trips and Hendricks and Morgan Counties are truly worth the drive!

On our trip, we learned about glass blowing:

Monday, May 19, 2014

**Disclosure: We received a copy of this book for the purpose of conducting an accurate review. No compensation was received. All opinions are 100% my own.

I am always amazed by the shear number of selections that Chicken Soup for the Soul has. Just when I think they quite possibly have a volume for every situation, they come up with a topic I didn't think about. Plus, all of the anecdotes included within really fosters a sense of camaraderie between all of us. One of the latest volumes of Chicken Soup for the Soul, The Multitasking Mom's Survival Guide, certainly does not disappoint and packs in enough humor to have you openly chuckling while reading the stories of mothers that have been there.

Finding Peace at The Grove in Glenview and the Best of the Midwest Blog Hop

Tuesday, May 13, 2014

This month the Best of the Midwest is taking you to Gardens to enjoy the natural beauties in the Midwest. One of our favorite places to go all year round but especially in Spring and Summer is The Grove. The Grove is tucked away right off of busy Milwaukee Avenue in Glenview. The site is actually a National Historic Landmark and is comprised of land once owned by a noted horticulturalist, Dr. John Kennicott, and his son Robert, an explorer and naturalist. The preserve is home to Dr. John Kennicott's home as well as the Redfield Estate. Additionally, the preserve includes replicas of a school house, a long house and a teepee as well as a real log cabin moved to the site from Michigan.

While having a distinctly historic component, The Grove also is a stunning natural space. We often visit when we know we need a change of pace but do not have time in our schedule to go too far. Amazingly, The Grove is entirely surrounded by the busy suburbs of Chicago. When walking the grounds, though, you barely notice! Equally surprisingly is that the grounds never seem totally swarmed with people--making walks very pleasant!

Pampering the Fur Babies with a Little Nootie {Grooming Products and Treats for Dogs}

Friday, May 9, 2014

**Disclosure: A sample of Daily Spritz and Yumzies were received for the purpose of an accurate review. No compensation was received. All opinions are 100% my own.

Some say that once you have children, the fur babies will be neglected. That has never been the case in my house. We have always made sure that our dogs get some extra attention. Sure, there are days when they don't get as much attention as we would like to give them. For the most part, though, our girls are pretty pampered.

The past couple of weeks, I have been trying out the Daily Spritz by Nootie to see if it would help with some of the odors my dogs have during the time between grooming visits. I am not sure if this type of pampering is more for me or them since it seems that they are in general pretty comfortable with their smells! But, my nose definitely needs some relief. So, giving the Daily Spritz a try was a welcome experience. I received a bottle of the Sweet Pea & Vanilla Scent to try out. The first fear about trying a product like this is that the scent will be overwhelming, which it is not. The Sweet Pea & Vanilla is a subtle yet enjoyable scent. The product was easy to apply and does not interfere with flea and tick prevention products that are important this time of year.

Mother's Day at Medieval Times {Deal}

Wednesday, May 7, 2014

If you are looking for something special to do with Mom and the fam this weekend, you may want to check out Medieval Times. My daughter and I went when she was little bit younger and she loved it. We were on a trip sponsored by her school and I had a great time watching how wrapped up the kids got in all of the jousting action. At one point, the knights tossed roses and the crowd of munchkins went crazy! Medieval Times combines dinner with a show--a good combination. Such a fun time!

If you are interested in visiting Medieval Times, they do have a deal this weekend giving Mom a free ticket on Mother's Day when you buy a full-priced adult ticket using web code MOMWeb through May 11, 2014. So, if you are still looking for something special to do with Mom this weekend, this may be just what you are looking for.

You can keep up with Medieval Times over on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest or Instagram.

Wickets Bar and Grill in Schaumburg for a Mom's Lunch Out (CLOSED)

Tuesday, May 6, 2014

**Disclosure: We received a complimentary meal for the purpose of conducting an accurate review. No compensation was received. All opinions are 100% our own.

Tucked away next to the Loews Theater in the Streets of Woodfield is a joint worth straying a bit from the main drag to visit--Wickets Bar and Grill. Recently, we were able to stop by Wickets for a bite and to learn about the offerings at this local eatery. Our visit came at the perfect time because in addition to trying Wickets' food and experiencing its atmosphere, we were able to learn about some menu changes starting this month.

When we arrived, we were pleasantly greeted by Manager Dennis Antoniello. Dennis has had a lengthy career in the food industry and his passion for creating great food and a wonderful atmosphere for patrons shows. We learned that Dennis opened Wickets with the concept of creating good food that he enjoyed while catering towards the tastes of customers. While we were there, Dennis circulated through the restaurant and conversed with his patrons-truly showing his care for the customers. He explained to us that by learning about his customers, he can make a restaurant that is inviting for them.

Mother's Day Quotes Part Deux

Monday, May 5, 2014

I ran across my previous post about Quote Garden and some great Mother's Day quotes that I found there. A really good quote can truly stand on its own and I love statements that are profound, sum up the feelings of a moment or get you to think. So, of course, my stumble inspired me to look up a few more quotes. These may come in handy as you reflect upon Mother's Day and as you get ready to write those cards!

Quotes from Mother's Day Celebration:

Making a decision to have a child--it's momentous. It is to decide forever to have your heart go walking around outside your body. ~ Elizabeth Stone

Women do not have to sacrifice personhood if they are mothers. They do not have to sacrifice motherhood in order to be persons. Liberation was meant to expand women's opportunities, not to limit them. The self-esteem that has been found in new pursuits can also be found in mothering. ~Elaine Heffner

There is only one pretty child in the world, and every mother has it. ~Chinese Proverb

Quote found in the Huffington Post:

My mother had a good deal of trouble with me but I think she enjoyed it. ~Mark Twain

Quotes from Parade:

Happy are those children who have a mother to whom they can pour out their hearts and always count on her understanding. ~ Eberhard Arnold

Life began with waking up and loving my mother’s face. ~ George Eliot

You may have tangible wealth untold. Caskets of jewels and coffers of gold. Richer than I you can never be. I had a mother who read to me. ~ Strickland Gillilan

Inspiration from Quote Garden:

Each day of our lives we make deposits in the memory banks of our children. ~Charles R. Swindoll, The Strong Family

A mom’s hug lasts long after she lets go. ~Author Unknown

A mother's heart is a patchwork of love. ~Author Unknown

Biology is the least of what makes someone a mother. ~Oprah Winfrey

We'll Always Have Paris: A Mother/Daughter Adventure {And Book Giveaway 5/11/14}

Paris from the Eiffer Tower
**Disclosure: I received a complimentary book for the purpose of this review. No compensation was received. All opinions are 100% my own.

There is nothing in the world like climbing the Eiffel Tour. Looking down at Paris is definitely an exhilarating moment that is frozen in time. Last year, my husband and I took our daughter to Paris to fulfill an important wish on our family bucket list. After a series of health issues for my husband and myself as well as others close to us, we decided to seize the moment and take our opportunity to go to Paris without regret. In truth though, our personal travel story actually began long before visiting Paris. When my daughter was born, my husband and I were determined to not let her hamper our travel aspirations. So, we have embarked on many adventures near and far with the little one in toe and have not looked back. Together, we will always have Paris........

When I received the opportunity to read Jennifer Coburn's We'll Always Have Paris: A Mother/Daughter Adventure, I jumped at the chance. While reading, I immediately felt a bond with Jennifer and discovered we are truly kindred spirits.  Jennifer in some ways was haunted by her father passing away from cancer at a young age and thought that she in turn would pass away way too soon. Her loss inspired her to go on some grand adventures with her daughter, making memories that would last--just in case. My own father passed away early in my daughter's life--when she was one. These losses can truly be a source of motivation. I almost lost my grandfather to a heart attack when I was in my early twenties. While he was recovering from bypass surgery, he advised me to travel for myself--scale those mountains that I had planned to for so long. The words of my grandfather stuck with me. I mean, here is this guy who just had five bypasses (yes, five) and he is telling me to travel! My husband took a little nudging, but we began traveling in whichever direction was available to us at the time. We did not stop when our family became 3.

Fact: Jennifer Coburn is a USA Today best selling author of six novels and contributor to four literary anthologies. This is her first memoir.

Throughout the book, Jennifer adeptly weaves the story of her remembrances of her father into the travelogue of her adventures with her daughter. Jennifer is able to embrace her relationship with her father while strengthening her relationship with her daughter through creating special moments. In some ways, her book is melodic and flows naturally during the course of her life. During the book, both Jennifer and her daughter, Katie, grow. I really loved seeing each relationship unfold and evolve.

We'll Always Have Paris--A Book We Can All Relate To

We'll Always Have Paris is a book we can all relate to. The book celebrates the joys of life and discoveries, the little stumbling blocks we find here and there, the tragedy and realization of mortality that we all must face and the spirit to find our way through and survive. The overall message encourages us to seize the moment yet savor the time we are with those we love. Towards the end of the book, Jennifer becomes less concerned with checking the items off of her list and has really settled more in to enjoying time with her daughter.

Theo Chocolate Comes to Chicagoland Meijers {and a Look at the Classic Bars}

Friday, May 2, 2014

**Disclosure: I did receive complimentary Theo Chocolate Bars for the purpose of this review. No compensation was received. All opinions are 100% my own.

I first tried Theo Chocolate a couple of years ago and have not been able to turn down a bar since. I have always found their chocolate selections to be lusciously thick, rich and delicious. When you bite into a Theo Chocolate Bar, you can immediately tell that it is a quality bar. While Theo does make a wonderful chocolate bar, the bars with the add-ins really grab you! As I write this, I am actually enjoying a few nibbles of their new Ginger Bar--made with 70% cacao chocolate. The chocolate is rich and decadent. The ginger is certainly fresh and pops out at you with a delightful bit of sharpness.

Theo is a Feel Good Company:

Besides having quality products, Theo is a company that you truly feel good about supporting. Theo's overall mission is to make the world a better place and to honor the interconnectedness of every person and place on Earth. Our actions here affect people nearby as well as people as far flung as the Congo or Ecuador. Something that seems pretty innocuous like buying a chocolate bar can have far reaching effects when you consider sourcing and all the people that have come together to create that bar and get it to you.

Ginger Bar, Raspberry Bar, Dark Chocolate Salted Almond Bar
