Summer Adventure to Denmark and Iceland with a Quick Stop in Sweden for Families with Teens

Summer Adventure to Denmark and Iceland with a Quick Stop in Sweden

Denmark and Iceland entranced our family for the last 10 days with castles, canals, fjords, waterfalls, history, royal jewels, gardens, volcanoes, Vikings and much more! While in Denmark, we even were able to add a short trip to Sweden by crossing the Øresundsbroen Bridge. Pairing Iceland and Denmark really worked well for our family. During our stay in Copenhagen, our days were full of tours of castles and landmarks taking time to absorb the immense history in the city and Denmark. Our days in Iceland were full of nature exploration, unique hikes and spectacular views. This vacation was really one of the best we have ever enjoyed and had something for all of our individual passions even the teen! We just returned yesterday and while I am a bit jet lagged, I am so inspired by our experiences that I would like to share a little about our adventure!

Laugarvatn Fontana Spa in Iceland

One experience to never miss in Iceland is an opportunity for pampering and relaxation at one of the country's geothermal spas. The Blue Lagoon is the logical choice for many travelers due to close proximity to the airport making it ideal for layovers. Additionally, it is serviced by many tours. However, I recommend venturing to other geothermal spas in more low key locations to truly unwind and relax with smaller crowds.

The Settlement Exhibition in Reykjavik Shines a Light on Archaeology and Viking Life

Thursday, October 13, 2016

Reykjavik's Settlement Exhibition unearths the ruins of Iceland's earliest Viking settlers in an engaging exhibit.

Reykjavik, Iceland is one of my favorite cities in the world and home to one of my favorite attractions -- The Settlement Exhibition. We first visited the museum during our first Iceland adventure in 2012. The museum housing the remains of a Viking longhouse adeptly uses multimedia to introduce visitors to methods for interpreting archaeological finds. Our first experience left such an impression on us that our family jumped at the chance to return last week.

Powerful and majestic Skogarfoss waterfall in Iceland
Powerful and majestic Skogarfoss waterfall
About a year ago, I learned joyous news -- Icelandair announced new service from Chicago. We had visited Iceland twice in the past with both trips involving traveling to a different gateway instead of the very convenient ORD. When I learned that Icelandair would begin flights from nearby Chicago, I immediately hatched a plan to return to Iceland to continue our exploration of its striking, raw and natural beauty. We opted for a fall visit to witness a different season since our previous two trips were in the summer.

Thingvellir Iceland
Stunning landscape at Thingvellir!

In March, Icelandair service from Chicago to Keflavik starts. Of all of the places we have visited, Iceland easily makes our favorite list time and time again. Dramatic raw, natural beauty and peaceful settings always have us yearning for a return trip. When I learned last year that Icelandair would be beginning service out of O’Hare, I was immediately ecstatic and brainstorming about a new journey to the island of Fire and Ice. Here are ten reasons to plan a trip to Iceland this year!

Family Vacation in Dublin, Ireland in the Spring!

Monday, April 20, 2015

Woo hoo, we're in Dublin!
Over the past couple of years, we have been trying to hit our bucket list destinations. When thinking about our next big adventure, Dublin quickly came into the running. So this year, we checked another one off of the list and visited Dublin over Spring Break. Normally, we plan trips like this during the summer so one during the spring was a bit of a departure from habit. We quickly learned that a big trip in the spring was certainly a welcome break! Frankly, I am not sure I can go back to taking the big trips in the summer or maybe it is just that I loved Ireland so much!
