Birding, Hiking and Nature Zen Inside Blue Star Memorial Woods in Glenview, IL

A wealth of preserves hug the North Branch Chicago River and we have delighted in exploring them. A free afternoon this week afforded us a lovely chunk of time to hike the trails of Blue Star Memorial Woods along the meandering  North Branch Chicago River.

A Fall Walk at The Grove {Glenview, Illinois}

Sunday, November 5, 2017

Once the rain cleared the past Sunday, we spent a little time exploring the trails at The Grove in Glenview. The combination between the rain and a craft fair ongoing inside the buildings on the grounds yielded to quiet trails with few other hikers. While the fall colors tended mainly towards browns with a few blazing yellows, we enjoyed the rustic fall ambiance very much.

Jolane's restaurant in Glenview, IL

Jolane's in Glenview is a great location for a family, home-cooked meal. We have celebrated a few family occasions there and find it to be a comfortable location if we want a meal with all the trimmings but not make it at home!

The Grove Holiday Arts & Craft Faire and a Fall Hike

The Kennicott House decorated for the holidays at The Grove in Glenview, IL
The Kennicott House decorated for the holidays.
One of my favorite events all year is The Grove Holiday Arts & Craft Faire! The Grove is both a historical landmark and nature preserve with several historic buildings nestled within a prairie grove. The Arts& Craft Faire is a very special time when several of the historic buildings, interpretive buildings and nature center are filled to the brim with quality crafts, artisan products and culinary treats. Guides in 19th century apparel, twinkling lights, whimsical snowmen and evergreen fronds add to the holiday atmosphere.

As I listen to sleet pelt my window, the realization that winter here in Chicago can be tough and bleak is hitting. I am always searching for inspirations to leave the house to lift my spirits during the winter months. Yesterday, my family uncovered quite the hidden gem in Glenview and we are already eager to return! The Rock House provides a warm, unique atmosphere that is part coffee house and part rock-n-roll. Truly a place for a little bit of a warm up in winter!

A Walk at Gallery Park in Glenview

Tuesday, March 17, 2015

Right near The Glen Town Center is Gallery Park along Lake Glenview. We like to visit Gallery Park every now and then for a change of scenery. Also, we find it a pleasant place to walk before or after a meal at The Glen Town Center. Even though the season is very young, we found the park to be full of life on our recent visit this past weekend.

Caffe Bene for Desserts in Glenview

Monday, December 29, 2014

**Disclosure: No compensation was received for this post. All opinions are 100% my own.

One rainy and totally dreary day, we decided to do some exploring and settled on finally visiting Caffe Bene in Glenview. I say finally because we must pass it at least once or twice a week and often remark we should stop. A damp and dreary day seemed to be the perfect excuse to take an adventure to a coffee shop. I knew that Caffe Bene was noteworthy for its coffee creations. However, I did not expect it to be a haven for dessert! Gelato, honey breads, waffles, cheesecakes, macaroons and more! We were actually a bit take aback by the choices and took awhile to decide.

A Day at Wagner Farm: Rural Living Smack in the Middle of Chicago's Suburbs

Saturday, April 26, 2014

If you are driving on Lake through Glenview, you may notice something that looks out of place. Yes, those really are cows and horses in the field. You have just stumbled on Wagner Farm. Wagner Farm has been on our list for a little family fun ever since we stumbled on it years ago. In fact, my daughter spent many Wednesday afternoons there when she attended preschool in the area. When my 2-year-old nephew came for a visit, Wagner topped our list as a place he would love. Of course, it did not disappoint.

**Fact: Wagner Farm is one of the last working dairy farms in Cook County!

Dinner at the Glenview House {New Twists and Old Favorites}

Monday, December 30, 2013

**Disclosure: No compensation was received for this post. All opinions are 100% my own.

A couple of nights ago, we found ourselves kid-free for the evening. We had tried the Glenview House some time ago and wanted to come back again to explore some other menu options. We thought that our date night was the perfect night to try Glenview House again. We visited pretty early on a Saturday evening and we were relieved to find the restaurant to be not too busy. There was a liveliness to it, but not crowded.

The Glenview House inhabits a lovely old brick building that has long served as a tavern. There are several floors to the building. On our first visit, we were able to sit upstairs. We found the upstairs to be elegant and nice and quiet. On  this occasion, we sat downstairs because the upstairs floor had been reserved. The downstairs is the bar area, so if you are there for the tavern feel, this is where you would want to eat.

We were seated quickly but were a little disappointed to be sitting downstairs. Since the restaurant was not crowded, though, the area did not get as noisy as it could have. Phew! In the future, if we ware looking for somewhere for a drink with a more boisterous yet comfortable atmosphere, the Glenview House would be on our list.

For our meal, we ordered a Caesar salad to share as well as our own meals. The Caesar salad was large with a healthy sprinkle of shredded Parmesan cheese. To me, shredded Parmesan has been the mark of a better than average Caesar salad. The powdered stuff just isn't good! I would definitely order this salad again!

Enjoying a Chocolate Tulip at The Glenview House

Monday, October 7, 2013

Recently, we enjoyed dinner at The Glenview House in Glenview. The Glenview House has quite a menu ranging from old pub favorites to traditional fare that has been kicked up a notch to even more sophisticated dishes. Being a chocophile, the item on the menu that spoke to me immediately happens to be the chocolate tulip cups for dessert (of course). I normally skip desserts. However, I just had to have a chocolate tulip cup dessert. The dessert definitely lived up to my chocolate expectations:

The chocolate tulip was graceful and full of a thick chocolate ganache sprinkled with a few berries. Almond biscotti drizzled with raspberry lambic accompanied the flower.

To say we enjoyed the dessert is an understatement since we devoured it. Thank goodness that there were three of us enjoying this creation as I probably would have felt a wee bit guilty later. The ganache was pretty thick and had a very addictive chocolate flavor.

Here is another view:

We enjoyed our meal at The Glenview House, so I will be blogging about them in the future. However, I had to share this dessert with you. What a wonderful discovery!
